Northford. Conn.- The Boston College women's ice hockey team defeated Quinnipiac University, 2-0, on Saturday evening in Northford, Conn. With the win, BC improves to 3-9-1 overall and 1-7-0 in ECAC play. The Braves fall to 3-11-2 overall and 0-8-0 in the conference. Senior forward Kelly McManus scored both Eagles' goals and freshman goaltender Lisa Davis made 18 saves to earn her third career shutout.
The Eagles came into the game looking to start the second half of their season on a good note. Both sides started off slowly, however, as the Eagles tried to shake off the rust of a one-month layoff. Both goaltenders stood strong in net, stopping all chances they faced. First period saves were 7-6 in favor of the visitors from Chestnut Hill.
The second period began much like the first, with both teams playing back and forth hockey. The Eagles finally broke through at the 15:34 mark, when McManus took a pass from junior defender Gen Richardson and beat Brave goalie Mel Courtemanche to give BC the lead, 1-0. It was the 5th goal of the season for McManus with Richardson and sophomore defender Sarah McGarrell registering the assists. The goal closed out the scoring for the second period, with the Eagles holding a 10-9 shot advantage.
BC would put the game away at 6:35 of the final period, when McManus buried an opportunity setup by sophomore defender Jessica Tychsen. Tychsen and sophomore forward Alaina Clark were credited with assists on the play. McManus's 6th goal of the season put the game beyond reach, as Davis would not allow anything to get past her in the final minutes.
Final shots for the game were 25-18 in favor of BC. Courtemanche made 23 saves for the Braves. BC was 0/1 on the power play and Quinnipiac finished 0/2 on the player-advantage.
The Eagles will return to action on Wednesday, January 9 at Maine. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
