
Men's Swimming Defeats Massachusetts Rival Holy Cross, 147-96

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - The Boston College men's swimming and diving team closed out its home portion of its 2001-02 schedule on Wednesday evening by defeating Massachusetts rival Holy Cross, 147-96, at the Flynn Recreation Complex.
Leading the way for the Eagles was freshman David Herman, who picked up two individual victories on the night. His first win came in the 1,000-yard freestyle, finishing with a time of 10:03.19. His time was 32 seconds faster than runner-up finisher John Sourbeer of Boston College, who finished the distance race with a time of 10:35.79. His second victory of the evening came in the other distance freestyle event - the 500-yard freestyle. He cruised to a first-place result with a time of 4:57.75.
Other individual winners Wednesday night were freshman Justin Welch, junior Travis McGahey and senior co-captain Stephen Hunter. Welch took home top honors in the 100-yard freestyle, finishing with a time of 50.44, while McGahey placed first in the 100-yard breaststroke, as he turned in a time of 1:04.45. Hunter finished first and second in his final meet at the Flynn Recreation Complex in the three- and one-meter diving competitions, respectively.
The Eagles had a successful evening in the two relay events. The team of juniors Matthew Baker and Matthias Schildwachter and freshmen Brandon Twichell and Welch picked up a first-place result in the 200-yard medley relay, finishing with a time of 1:42.17. Baker, Welch and freshmen Michael Dellamano and Robert Keely closed out the evening for Boston College by winning the 400-yard freestyle relay, turning in a time of 3:23.13.
The men's swimming and diving team is back in action at 1 p.m. Sunday, February 10, when it takes on BIG EAST rival Georgetown in Washington, D.C.
