Track And Field Teams Have Strong Showings At Husky Invitational

BOSTON - The Boston College men's and women's indoor track and field teams had strong showing on Friday evening at the Husky Invitational in the Reggie Lewis Track & Athletic Center on the campus of Northeastern University. The men's team finished with a team score of 31 points, which was good enough for eighth place, while the women finished fourth out of 14 teams with a score of 56.50.
The women's team was led by senior tri-captain Katie Ryan, who helped lead the Eagles to a one-two-three finish in the one-mile run. Ryan placed first, followed by junior Laura Smith and sophomore Jennifer Donovan. The three finished the race with times of 4:51.88, 4:59.32 and 5:01.80, respectively.
Sophomore Jennifer Kramer picked up eight points for the Eagles, as she placed second out of 31 participants in the 3,000-meter run with a time of 10:02.76. Freshman Melissa Sherman had a strong showing in the 800-meter run, as she placed sixth with a time of 2:20.94.<>
The women's distance medley team picked up 10 points for the Eagles as they took first place with a time of 12:00.34. Their time was 16 seconds faster than runner-up finisher Connecticut, who turned in a time of 12:16.63. Freshman Saki Sugano placed sixth out of 27 participants in the pole vault competition, finishing with a mark of 10'06.00". Junior Nicolette Pogue also placed sixth for the Eagles, as she turned in a mark of 36'09.00" in the triple jump.
Senior tri-captain Mike McKenzie led the men's team on Friday with a second-place finish out of 33 participants in the 800-meter run, finishing with a time of 1:56.31. Freshman John Kennedy also had a strong showing for the Eagles in the 800, finishing 11th with a time of 2:00.27.
Junior Shawn Wallace continued his strong indoor season in the one-mile run as he placed sixth out of 31 competitors, turning in a time of 4:22.86. Sophomore Byron Gartrell finished a few spots behind Wallace as he placed ninth, finishing with a time of 4:28.07. Junior Brian Mahoney earned the Eagles six points by finishing third in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 15:15.70.
The men's distance medley team placed third out of eight teams with a time of 10:17.42, which was only three seconds behind eventual winner, the University of Massachusetts-Lowell. Senior tri-captain Tony Bierne and sophomore Keith Normant both earned the Eagles three points apiece in their respective events. Bierne finished sixth in the 35 lbs. weight throw, finishing with a mark of 51'01.50. Normant had a solid result in the triple jump, as he placed sixth with a mark of 41'10.00".
The men's and women's indoor track and field teams are back in action on Saturday, February 2, when they compete at the Rhode Island Invitational in Kingston, R.I.
