
Men's And Women's Swimming Earn Wins Against Maine

ORONO, Maine - The Boston College men's and women's swimming and diving teams ventured to New England rival Maine on Saturday afternoon at the Stanley M. Wallace Pool, and when they returned to campus on Saturday evening both teams arrived with a victory. The men's team defeated the Black Bears 158.5-137.5, while the women cruised to its fourth straight victory by defeating the Black Bears 166-132.
The men kicked the afternoon off by taking first place in the 200-yard medley relay. The team of freshman Brandon Twichell, sophomore Andy Naumann and juniors Matthias Schildwachter and Matthew Baker finished the race with a time of 1:41.80.
Sophomore David Bliss had a strong afternoon for head coach Tom Groden's squad. Bliss took home top honors in the 100- and 200-yard backstroke events, finishing with times of 56.56 and 2:07.88, respectively. Naumann also had a strong meet from an individual standpoint. He cruised to a first-place finish in the 200-yard individual medley, finishing with a time of 2:03.18 which was six seconds faster than his closet challenger. Naumann also finished runner-up in the 100-yard breaststroke, completing the race with a time of 1:03.93.
Junior Nick Riolo earned the Eagles an important nine points on Saturday as he took first place in the 200-yard butterfly, finishing with a time of 2:03.19. Twichell continued his amazing in the breaststroke events this season. He won the 200-yard breaststroke event with a time of 2:09.95, which was 11 seconds faster than runner-up finisher Andrew Fromm of Boston College. Senior captain Stephen Hunter earned two runner-up finishes for the Eagles in the two diving competitions. He finished with a total score of 189.15 on the one-meter board and a 127.00 on the three-meter board.
Senior Nicole Duffy was the first victor of the afternoon for the women's team. Duffy won the grueling 1,650-yard freestyle event with a time of 17:31.54, which was 40 seconds faster than second-place finisher Caitlin Healey of Boston College. In the other distance freestyle event, senior Lauren Ohtake took first place in the 500-yard freestyle, finishing with a time of 5:16.42.
Freshman Kathleen McCann was one of two Boston College women's swimmers to win two individual events. McCann's first win came in the 100-yard breaststroke, which she finished with a time of 1:10.04. He second win came in the 200-yard individual medley, finishing with a time of 2:14.19.
Senior tri-captain Lauren Schwartz was the other women's swimmer to earn first-place finishes in two individual events. She cruised to her first victory of the afternoon in the 200-yard butterfly, finishing with a time of 2:09.82. She came back later with the only sub one-minute time in the 100-yard butterfly, finishing with a time of 59.24.
Freshman Keri Rubeis earned the Eagles an important nine points as she took first-place finish in the one-meter diving competition, finishing with a total score of 186.00. Rubeis was the only Boston College diver in the event, while Maine had four divers who combined to earn nine points. Senior Nina Suryoutomo was the last women's swimmer to take home a first-place result. She won the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 2:12.21.
The men's team is back in action when it hosts Holy Cross at 6 p.m. Wednesday at the Flynn Recreation Complex, and the women's team returns to the pool at 6 p.m. Friday to take on cross-town rival Northeastern in Boston.
