
Swimming Teams Split Meet With Rhode Island

KINGSTON, R.I. - The Boston College women's swimming and diving team picked up its seventh victory of the season on Saturday when the Eagles defeated Rhode Island 195-102, however, the men's team was not able to pick its second-consecutive victory as it fell 164-135 to the Rams.
Seniors Alexis Kostopoulos and Lauren Schwartz, junior Nina Suryoutomo and sophomore Nina Suryoutomo kicked the afternoon off by winning the 200-yard medley relay, finishing with a time of 1:51.62. The men's 200-yard medley relay team of juniors Matthew Baker and Matthias Schildwachter and freshmen Justin Welch and Brandon Twichell also took home first place in the event, finishing with a time of 1:41.47.
Sophomore Caitlin Leahy was the first individual winner of the afternoon for the Eagles. Leahy took home first place in the grueling 1,000-yard freestyle, finishing with a time of 10:49.39. Sophomore Caitlin Healey followed Leahy's victory up with a first-place result in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:58.83. Healey continued her success in the freestyle events as she also won the 100-yard event, finishing with a time of 54.68.
Suryoutomo had a big day for Boston College has she won the 100- and 200-yard backstroke, finishing with times of 1:01.25 and 2:12.58, respectively. She earned a fourth victory of the day in the final event of the day, which was the 200-yard freestyle relay. She joined Leahy, junior Christa Ehlers and freshman Kathleen McCann.
Junior Caitlin Klick also notched to victories on Saturday as she won the 50-yard freestyle and the 200-yard individual medley, finishing with times of 25.38 and 2:15.41, respectively. Other individual winners for the women's team were Kathleen McCann won the 100-yard and 200-yard butterfly events with times of 1:00.40 and 2:12.12, respectively. Lauren Schwartz was victorious in the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:30.90.
On the men's side, freshman Brandon Twichell had a strong afternoon for the Eagles. To go along with his victory in the 200-yard medley relay, he also won the 100- and 200-yard breaststroke and 200-yard individual medley events. He completed the three races with times of 1:01.64, 2:11.81 and 2:01.58, respectively.
Senior Steven Hunter had a solid showing in the three-meter diving event, finishing with a score of 172.05 which was good enough for first place. He also finished runner-up on the one-meter board, turning in a score of 180.98.
Freshman Nick Riolo placed second in the 200-yard butterfly, finishing with a time of 1:58.81. Matthew Baker had a runner-up finish in the 50-yard freestyle, finishing with a time of 22.18.
The women's swimming and diving team is back in action on Tuesday, January 22, when it travels to take on cross-town rival Boston University at 7 p.m. The men are also back in action on Wednesday, January 23, when it hosts Boston University at 7 p.m. at the Flynn Recreation Complex.
