
Swimming Teams Pick Up Wins Against New Hampshire

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - The Boston College men's and women's swimming and diving teams kicked off the new year in winning fashion on Thursday evening by defeating the University of New Hampshire at the Flynn Recreation Complex. The men's team dethroned the Wildcats 173-124, while the women did not have much trouble either as they won 170-123.
Junior Nina Suryoutomo was the big winner on the night for the women's squad. She finished the meet with three first-place finishes, which came in the 50- and 100-yard freestyle and the 100-yard backstroke. She finished the three races with time of 24.76, 54.37 and 1:01.25, respectively.
Sophomore Caitlin Healey also had a strong night for head coach Tom Groden's squad. She picked up wins in the two most rigorous event - 500- and 1,000-yard freestyle. Healey won her first event of the evening, which was in the 1,000, with a time of 10:41.93, and then followed that up by winning the 500 with a time of 5:17.03.
Other individual winners Thursday night for the women's team were seniors Alexis Kostopoulos, who was victorious in the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:29.43, and Lauren Schwartz, who took home top honors in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 2:10.35. Sophomore Michelle Lane placed first in the 100-yard breaststroke, finishing with a time of 1:09.57.
The women also were victorious in the 400-yard freestyle relay. Kostopoulos, Schwartz and fellow seniors Lauren Ohtake and Sarah Dreyer finished the relay with a time of 3:46.51.
Sophomore John Sourbeer earned the first victory of the night for the men's team as he took home top honors in the 1,000-yard freestyle, finishing with a time of 10:31.44, which was a little less than nine seconds faster than Greg Cross of New Hampshire. Sourbeer returned later on the evening in the 500-yard freestyle, and once again had another first-place result. This time, he edged out teammate and fellow sophomore Chris Lucarz. Sourbeer finished the race with a time of 5:04.90, while Lucarz came in with a time of 5:06.36.
Junior Matthew Baker had a similar evening to Sourbeer as he also won two events. Baker's first win of the night came in the 50-yard freestyle, finishing with a time of 22.31, just beating out teammate Justin Welch, who finished with a time of 22.79. Baker came back in another sprint event later on the evening and had the same result as he won the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 49.30.
Freshman Brandon Twichell joined Sourbeer and Baker as he also finished with two first-place finishes. Twichell took first place in the 400-yard individual medley and the 200-yard backstroke, finishing with times of 4:21.26 and 2:11.45, respectively.
The final victory of the night for the men came in the 400-yard freestyle relay as Baker, sophomore Gordon Glover and freshmen Robert Keely and Justin Welch won the sprint-freestyle event with a time of 3:23.95.
The men's and women's swimming teams are back in action when they travel to take on the University of Rhode Island at 1 p.m. Saturday in Kingston, R.I.
