Women's Ice Hockey Falls to Providence, 5-1

PROVIDENCE, R.I.- The Boston College women's ice hockey team lost to Providence College, 5-1, on Wednesday night at Schneider Arena. With the loss, BC drops to 3-11-3 overall on the season and 1-9-2 in the ECAC Eastern. PC improves to 8-8-3, 5-4-2 in the ECAC. Senior forward Kelly McManus scored the Eagles' only goal and freshman goaltender Lisa Davis made 26 saves for the Eagles.
Providence jumped out to an early lead in the first period, when freshman Hilary Greaves lit the lamp at the 15:43 mark. The Friars double their lead less than three minutes later when sophomore defender Kelly Halcisak stole the puck from the Eagles and skated in alone, beating Davis for the 2-0 lead. The first period would end with the Friars enjoying a two-goal advantage.
The second period would start out like the first had ended, as the Friars added to their lead. Halcisak, again, found herself in a prime scoring spot, and tapped in a rebound off of a freshman Carrie Holldorf shot at 9:25
BC would cut the lead to two less than two minutes later when McManus took a pass from senior captain Missy Barsz and beat Friar netminder Amy Thomas. The goal, McManus' ninth of the season, came with the Eagles enjoying a two-player advantage. Barsz registered her fourth assist of the season on the play.
That was as close as BC would come, however, as two third period goals put the game out of reach of the visitors. Senior captain Kim Mathias scored a power play goal at the 5:00 mark to increase the lead to three goals and freshman Rush Zimmerman finished off the scoring at 16:43, taking a pass from Meredith Roth and beating Davis.
For the game, the Friars out shot the Eagles 31 to 12. Both teams were 1 / 4 on the power play.
The Eagles return to action on Saturday, January 19 against Yale at Matthews Arena (Northeastern University). Game time is set for 12 p.m.
