Track Squads Have Strong Showings At Yale Collegiate

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The Boston College men's and women's indoor track and field teams both turned in solid performances at the Yale University Collegiate Classic on Saturday at Coxe Cage. While there was no team scoring for the event, several athletes on both the men's and women's sides had good results.
Leading the way for the women's team were freshmen Liz Hassan and Saki Sugano, who both picked up first-place finishes on the day. Hassan helped lead the one-two-three charge in the pentathlon as she finished with a score of 3,071 in the five-event competition. Sophomore Julie Heyde and freshman Jackie Tanzella followed right behind Hassan as they finished second and third, respectively, in the event. Heyde finished less than 50 points behind Hassan, turning in a score of 3,022, while Tanzella completed the event with a total of 2,805 points.
Sugano was the other member of the women's team to earn a first-place result. She turned in a mark of 10'04.00" in the pole vault event, while fellow freshman Megan Mara placed third, finishing with a mark of 9'04.25".
Sophomores Jennifer Kramer and Jennifer Donovan placed second and third, respectively, in the two individual distance events. Kramer finished runner-up in the 3,000-meter run, turning in time of 10:24.36, while Donovan placed third in the one-mile run with a time of 5:08.30.
Head coach Randy Thomas received another solid showing from one of his freshmen. Anne Marie Walsh placed third in both the long and triple jump events. Walsh jumped to a mark of 16'06.50" in the long jump, while she finished with a mark of 35'01.25" in the triple jump.
The Boston College men's team had a strong showing in the 800-meter run as freshmen Trevor Rozier-Byrd and Corey Manchester finished fourth and fifth, respectively, in the event. Rozier-Byrd finished with a time of 2:03.02, while Manchester completed the race with a time of 2:03.25.
In the 3,000-meter run, junior Brian Mahoney and senior Steve Lester placed fifth and sixth, respectively, out of the 28 competitors. Mahoney finished the race with a time of 8:55.73, while Lester completed the race with a time of 9:05.18.
Senior tri-captain Tony Bierne placed eighth in both the shot put and 35 lbs. weight throw. He finished with a throw of 43'07.00" in the shot put, while throwing the weight to a mark of 46'11.00". Junior Keith Normant placed seventh in the long jump, finishing with his best jump of the day at 42'00.50". Junior Gabriel Verdaguer completed the five-event pentathlon in eighth place, finishing with a total score of 3,226.
The women's indoor track and field team is back in action on Friday, Jan. 25, at the Solomon Husky Invitational and the Terrier Classic.
