Swimming Relay Teams Have Strong Showing In Puerto Rico

Vega Baja, P.R. - The Boston College men's and women's swimming and diving teams ventured down to Puerto Rico for their annual winter training trip, and while the squads were soaking up the rays they were also preparing for the second half of the 2001-02 season.
The trip to Puerto Rico concluded with a relay meet against BIG EAST rivals Syracuse and Seton Hall and Smith College, which only competed in the women's races, on Jan. 7. The women's team placed second and third, respectively, in the 200-yard freestyle relay and 200-yard medley relay.
In the 200-yard freestyle relay, the team of sophomore Caitlin Healey, senior Alexis Kostopoulos and juniors Caitlin Klick and Nina Suryoutomo turned in a time of 1:58.72. Junior Lauren Donnelly and freshmen Sarah Quintana, Jennifer Canesi and Jennifer Moquin also had a strong showing in the freestyle relay, turning in a time of 2:05.25 which was good enough for sixth place.
Freshman Kathleen McCann, sophomore Michelle Lane, senior Lauren Schwartz and junior Nicole Duffy led the Eagles in the 200-yard medley relay, finishing third with a time of 2:15.03. Senior Brianne Sullivan, freshman Erin Fransen, senior Caitlin Barry and freshman Amy Terrill took home fifth place in the competition, finishing with a time of 2:19.48.
On the men's side, sophomore Andrew Naumann, freshman Brandon Twichell, junior Matthias Schildwachter and freshman John Ewing turned in the strongest relay performance of the day as they finished fourth in the 200-medley relay, finishing with a time of 2:02.80. Junior Jay Pollack, sophomore Andrew Fromm, junior Nick Riolo and sophomore Brendan Lavelle finished in six place in the 200-yard medley relay, finishing with a time of 2:12.
The men's team also picked up a fourth-place finish in the 200-yard freestyle relay. Freshmen Robert Keely and Scott Sprinkel, sophomore Joey VanSuan and junior Matthew Baker finished the race with at time of 1:50.20.
The men's and women's swimming and diving teams are back in action at 5 p.m. Thursday, January 17, against New Hampshire at the Flynn Recreation Complex.
