STORRS, Conn. - The Boston College women's ice hockey team fell to the University of Connecticut, 4-1, on Sunday at UConn Ice Arena. With the loss, BC drops to 3-10-3 overall and 1-8-2 in the ECAC. Connecticut improves to 9-9-2 overall and 6-4-2 in conference play. Senior assistant captain Kelly McManus scored the only Eagle goal and freshman net minder Lisa Davis made 35 saves.
Coming into the final match of their season series, both teams appeared to be even, at least on paper. Two earlier matches on the season had resulted in a close Husky victory (4-3) and a 1-1 draw.
Connecticut, however, came out in the first period looking to dominate their New England foes. The home side would open the scoring at 15:06 of the first frame, when Sara Mahoney fired a blast past Davis. Jacquelyn McGuire and Megan McLeod registered assists on the play. The first period would end with the Huskies holding the one-goal lead and a 14-6 shot advantage.
Connecticut would double its lead just 3:12 into the second frame, when Kimberly Berry broke in on a shorthanded chance and beat Davis for the Huskies' second goal. Caitlin Salazar-Reid assisted on the score.
The Eagles would not go down without a fight, however, and would strike back just four minutes later. McManus converted on a terrific opportunity, skating in on Husky goaltender Samantha Dexter and beating her along the ice to cut the lead to one goal.
The Eagles would continue to press in the third period and a power play opportunity at the 5:39 mark gave the visitors from Chestnut Hill a chance to tie the game. Connecticut would not let BC back into the match, as a shorthanded rush would allow Berry to net her second special teams goal on the evening. Berry was assisted by Shannon Connolly on the play.
UConn would put the game out of reach two minutes later when Allison Oropallo beat Davis on a pass from Sarah Clark.
For the game, Connecticut out shot BC 39-22.
