STORRS, Conn.- The Boston College women's ice hockey team tied the University of Connecticut, 1-1, Saturday afternoon at UConn Ice Arena. With the draw, Boston College moves to 3-9-3 overall and 1-7-2 in the ECAC and increases its unbeaten streak to a season-high three games(1-0-2). Senior captain Missy Barsz scored the team's only goal and freshman goaltender Lisa Davis made 37 saves for the Eagles.
Coming off a tough road tie against the University of Maine on January 5, the Eagles tried to continue their recent string of success against the young upstarts from Connecticut.
The first period saw back-and-forth play with both goaltenders looking sharp. With time in the period winding down and skating four-on-four, the home team struck first. At 17:16, Kimberly Berry took a pass from Shannon Connolly and fired a shot past Davis. Connolly and Lauren Stosky registered the assists on the play and the Huskies led 1-0. The period would end with no further scoring, despite BC holding a slight shot advantage 12-11.
The Eagles raised their intensity level in the second period. With just over two minutes gone in the middle frame, the BC pressure paid off as the Huskies were whistled for a two-minute penalty. With Sarah Clark off for roughing, it would not take the Eagles long to knot the score. Only seven seconds into the penalty, Barsz took a pass from senior forward Jaclyn Kryzak and beat Husky goaltender Shannon Murphy. Kryzak and freshman defender Sarah Carlson registered assists on the score, Barsz's sixth goal of the season. The second period ended with the score 1-1. Connecticut held the slight shot advantage for the second period, with 12 shots to BC's 10.
The third period played out similarly to the first two, with both netminders playing fantastic hockey. Neither goalie would make the mistake that would cost their team the game. Davis stopped all 11 shots she faced in the final frame, sending the game into overtime.
The extra period would not decide a winner, however, as both Davis and Murphy combined to stop all seven shots that they faced.
Murphy finished with 33 saves for the Huskies and Davis continued her stellar play for the Eagles stopping all but one of the 38 she faced. Connecticut was 0/5 on the power play while BC finished 1/4. The power play goal was the first of the season for the Eagles on 42 advantages.
The two teams will return to action on Sunday, January 13 in the final game of their season series. Game time is set for 2 p.m.
