NEWTON, Mass. - Casey Schmidt scored the game's lone goal in the 87th minute as the 15th-ranked Boston College Eagles defeated St. Francis (N.Y.), 1-0, at the Newton Campus Soccer Field on Wednesday. The Eagles outshot the Terriers 23-4 in the game, including 18-2 margin in the second half of play. With the win, Boston College improved to 2-0-0 on the season, while St. Francis fell to 1-2-0.
Both teams were held to limited chances in the first half, but the Eagles exploded in the second half after St. Francis' Joseph Affuli was sent out of the game in the 54th minute for a violent tackle on Kirt Dorsett.
The Eagles had two key scoring chances midway through the second half. Adam Pfeifer kicked a shot from the top of the box off the crossbar, which rebounded to Neil Krause, who put a shot on only to see the shot ricochet out of the goalkeeper's hands. The rebound came to Chris Cleary, who shot the ball inches wide left. Later in the half, Cleary found the left post after one of his shots deflected through the Terriers' keeper's arms.
Schmidt knocked in the game-winning score, his second in as many games, after Krause knocked down a Ramon Smith cross at the doorstep on the left post.
Eagles goalkeeper Danny Caruso earned his first career shutout by directing the backfield. His defense did not allow a shot on net in the game. Waldo Diaz had six saves in the loss for St. Francis, including several point-blank saves in the second half.
Boston College will next face 18th-ranked Seton Hall on Saturday, Sept. 8 in South Orange, N.J. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
