CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - The Boston College men's soccer team received welcome news on Monday night when the National Soccer Coaches Association of America released its first in-season poll of the 2001 season. After a 5-1 win over Syracuse on Friday, August 31, the Eagles surged into the Division I national poll with a 15th-place ranking.
Head coach Ed Kelly's squad has etched its place among the nation's best over the past year and a half, winning the 2000 BIG EAST Tournament and advancing to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since the 1990 campaign.
The BIG EAST Conference is the most represented conference in the poll, placing six teams in the Top 25. St. John's is ranked third, defending national champion Connecticut is ranked seventh and Rutgers is ranked 10th. Seton Hall follows BC in 18th place and Notre Dame is ranked 21st.
Last season, BC earned a national ranking of 22 in the final regular season NSCAA poll after capping a six-game winning streak by defeating Seton Hall for the conference tournament title. The Eagles were not ranked in the 2001 preseason edition of the poll.
The 15th-ranked Eagles will continue the 2001 schedule on Wednesday, Sept. 5 when they host St. Francis (N.Y.) at 3 p.m. at the Newton Campus Soccer Field.
