Women's Volleyball Splits at Wagner Tournament

Staten Island N.Y.- The Boston College women's volleyball team dropped a tightly contested match to Cornell University on Saturday evening, 3-1 (27-30, 33-21, 27-30, 29-31). With the result, BC finishes the tournament in second place, with two wins and one loss, and Cornell takes first place, winning all three of their matches. Overall the Eagles drop to 10-4 and the Big Red improve to 8-4. Junior Rachel Bach led BC with 15 kills and two service aces, senior outside hitter Brooke Shull also played well, adding 12 kills and four digs.
BC dropped the first game, but displayed strong resolve taking game two by a score of 33-31. Cornell showed determination, however, taking the final two games by a combined five points (30-27, 31-29). Freshman setter Jessica Brizzolara continued her incredible play with six kills, 49 assists and a career-high 14 digs. Freshman outside hitter Katie Andersen also played a strong match with 14 kills and nine digs.
In the early match, BC defeated the host school, Wagner College, 3-0 (30-17, 31-29, 30-20). Shull led the Eagles with 17 kills (.536 hitting percentage) and 8 digs and Brizzolara fell one kill short of a triple-double, contributing a career-high nine kills (.615 hitting percentage), 40 assists and 12 digs.
Coach Hadel's team jumped out early on the Seahawks and took game one by a score of 30-17. Game two would prove to be very close, but the Eagles showed their mental toughness by pulling out a 31-29 win. BC took game three 30-20. Junior setter Rachel Bach added a strong performance with 10 kills and four assists.
Rachel Bach and Brooke Shull were named to the All-Tournament team for their stellar play this weekend. Jessica Brizzolara's performance, while not nominated for All-Tournament honors, gave her an impressive three-game total of 21 kills, 122 assists and 30 digs.
The Eagles next take the court on Wednesday, October 3 at Harvard University. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
