Schmidt Leads Men's Soccer Over Virginia Tech

BLACKSBURG, Va. - Junior forward Casey Schmidt scored a goal in the 72nd minute to lift the Boston College men's soccer team over Virginia Tech, 2-1, at Blacksburg Field on Saturday. With the win, the Eagles improved to 3-2-0 overall and 2-1-0 in BIG EAST play. Virginia Tech lost its first BIG EAST Conference game in program history, and fell to 4-2-0 overall and 0-1-0 in league games.
Junior Bobby Thompson opened the scoring, converting a quick-touch passing play from Schmidt and Chris Cleary in the fifth minute. The score held through the half as BC out-shot the Hokies 7-4 in the frame.
In the 52nd minute, Virginia Tech's Bobby O'Brien knotted the score at 1-1, heading in a cross past Eagle keeper Danny Caruso.
Schmidt's game-winning goal, from Kirt Dorsett of a free kick restart, was his fifth of the season.
Caruso made four saves in the win, while his Hokie counterpart Colin Kibler made four saves in the loss. Boston College is the first school to tally two goals on the Hokies this season. For the game, the Eagles out-shot Virginia Tech 12-11, holding off a strong Hokie threat midway through the second half.
The Eagles will next face Harvard on Wednesday, Sept. 26 at 3 p.m. at the Newton Campus Soccer Field.
