CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Boston College men's soccer assistant coach Zach Samol has been recognized by College Soccer News as one of the "Top Assistant Coaches of 2001." The on-line publication released its list of the nation's top Division I assistant coaches earlier this week.
In his second season with the Eagles, Samol is head coach Ed Kelly's top assistant, working day-to-day with the team in scouting, recruiting and on-the-field teaching. Last season, he came in and helped Kelly bring the team back into the national spotlight. The team won the BIG EAST Tournament for the first time since 1990 and earned a berth in the NCAA Tournament for the first time since the same year. In addition, the Eagles posted the nation's eighth-best team goals against average, allowing 0.81 goals per game in 2000. The mark signified a 0.54 goal improvement of the team's 1999 average.
Samol joins an impressive list of other assistant coaches from some of the nation's best men's soccer programs, including Indiana, St. Louis, Creighton, Maryland, Connecticut, Rutgers, Ohio State and Virginia.
The Eagles will next play Hartford on Wednesday, Sept. 19 in West Hartford at 7 p.m. Currently, BC is 2-1-0 overall and 1-1-0 in BIG EAST games.
