Women's Volleyball Splits Doubleheader

Orono, ME- The Boston College Women's Volleyball team rebounded from a tough morning loss to defeat the Black Knights of Army and earn a split on the final day of the Sea-Sun Opener Invitational, tonight. Freshman Katie Andersen led the Eagles with 16 kills and freshman setter Jessica Brizzolara contributed 51 assists on the day.
BC started the day facing a strong Eastern Washington University team. Coach Hadel's squad hung tough in the early going, jumping out to an early 4-2 lead. EWU would take charge with a run of 11 straight points, to win the first game by the score of 30-21. Robyn Felder led the way for EWU, contributing a match-high 17 kills. EWU took command of the match in the second game, overpowering BC 30-22. In game three, the Eagles fought to get back into the match. Despite a valiant effort, BC fell in the final game 30-18. Anderson, Rachel Bach and Laura Powers each contributed 5 kills in the effort, while Brizzolara added a team-high 17 assists.
The nightcap pitted the Eagles against a strong Army squad. Looking to rebound from the early loss, BC came out firing. Led by Andersen's match-high 11 kills and Brizzolara's match-high 34 assists, the Eagles took charge in game one, winning by a score of 30-21. Army again started out slowly in game two and BC looked for the knockout punch. The hapless Black Knights could not withstand the Eagles' constant pressure and dropped the game 30-20. The momentum continued to be on BC's side in what proved to be the final game, as Army failed to break through with a lead. Errors cost the Black Knights dearly as the Eagles took the final game 30-23. With the win, BC improves to 2-1 on the season. Army fell to 0-3.
Junior's Kim Carlson and Lauren Schwer were elected to the All-Tournament Team. Carlson contributed 16 kills and 16 digs and Schwer added 21 kills and 35 digs on the weekend.
BC next takes the court against the University of New Hampshire on Wednesday, September 5. Match time is set for 7 p.m.
