I was reminded of the most important thing in sports this weekend. I was reminded why I started playing in the first place. Soccer is a game and its meant to be fun, for some reason I had forgotten that, and it took a reminder to make me realize that.
You can win all the games that you want, and score 100 goals in a season, but if its not fun then its not satisfying. I forgot what I used to feel like on Saturday mornings when I was six years old, and getting ready for my soccer game. The feeling that would go through my body was indescribable - I just loved to play. I loved everything about it, I loved watching it, I loved thinking about it, I slept with my shin guards on and a ball in my arms.
I guess as I got older I began to lose sight of that, and I became too results oriented and the fun began to slip away. I would still have fun from time to time, but I had to play well for it to be fun, and you really have no control over whether you play well, there are too many variables. But if having fun on the field is the most important thing, the rest of it just comes.
Soccer was made for people to have fun and that's exactly what I plan to do for the rest of my soccer career, because for all I know I could get hurt tomorrow at practice and never be able to play again, and what I would miss the most is the playing and not the winning and the recognition. It just took a reminder, and an open mind that regrettably had been closed to this suggestion for too long. Thanks.
This was a special week for the Boston College men's soccer team. We came of age so to speak. We lost to the defending national champion Connecticut, but we played with them. We threw everything at them and had them on their heels. Even though we walked off the field a goal behind, we knew, and they knew, that Boston College was now a legitimate national presence, and a contender. The game was back and forth and UConn was lucky to walk away winners. It was a great game, and I was proud just to be a part of it, but next time well be looking for more.
We capped off the week with a gritty win against a hard working West Virginia team. We were behind twice, but came back twice with goals from Chris Cleary and Kirt Dorsett. We won the game eight minutes from the end, on a goal that very much personified the game. The ball was sent into their box where there was a bit of a melee, and the ball squirted into the side of their net to settle the score. While the game was often ugly and we made mistakes, we were clearly the better team, and we at times showed how well we can play. From now on we need to look to clean up the mistakes when we play teams that are not as talented as us. If we do, there is no reason we should lose another game for quite a while.
We have an interesting week ahead of us, we play Providence who has not won a game, then we travel to Notre Dame for a Saturday night showdown with the Irish. We really need to focus on the Wednesday game with Providence, so as not to look past it to the ND game. This will be a difficult task for us and it will test our focus, another challenge that we are eager to take on.
Oh yeah... Kenny and Gabe shaved their heads. No one's gonna recognize them. I was just joking about Gabe, his head is too much of a peanut for him to shave it.
