CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Boston College senior defenseman Brooks Orpik, junior forward Krys Kolanos and sophomore forward Chuck Kobasew have decided to forgo their remaining collegiate eligibility to pursue professional hockey careers. All three players were first-round NHL draft picks.
Orpik signed a professional contract with the Pittsburgh Penguins on Tuesday. He was the club's first pick, 18th overall, in the 2000 draft. Also on Tuesday, Kobasew, the 14th overall pick by Calgary in 2001, left Boston College to sign with the Kelowna Rockets of the Western Hockey League. Kolanos is expected to sign with Phoenix of the NHL in the near future. He was the Coyotes' first pick, 19th overall, in 2000.
"We're very happy for each of these players, and wish them the best in the future," York said. "They certainly made great contributions to our program."
Despite the three recent losses, added to the eight graduated seniors, York remained positive.
"We have a very solid group of players returning, and we've added some very promising newcomers to the line-up," the coach said.
Boston College will play its first game of the 2001-02 season on Oct. 6 at Vermont.
