Smith Awarded NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Shannon Smith, a 2000 graduate of the College of Arts and Sciences and the 2001 NCAA Division I indoor track national champion in the 3,000-meters, was awarded an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship, the organization announced. The award was given on the basis of her outstanding combination of academic and athletic accomplishments while at Boston College.
The Fairport, N.Y. native was a two-time All-American in cross country and a two-time All-American on the track, graduated with an undergraduate degree in geo-science major. Last year, she began work on her graduate degree in the Carroll Graduate School of Management.
The NCAA awarded 116 postgraduate scholarships of $5,000 each to 58 men and 58 women who participated in winter and spring sports. In addition to the winter and spring sport honorees, the NCAA awarded 58 postgraduate scholarships to student-athletes participating in fall sports (29 for men and 29 for women) in which the NCAA conducts championships, for a total of 174 postgraduate scholarships annually.
To qualify for an NCAA postgraduate scholarship, a student-athlete must have an overall grade-point average of 3.000 (on a 4.000 scale) or its equivalent and must have performed with distinction as a member of the varsity team in the sport in which the student-athlete was nominated. The student-athlete must have behaved, both on and off the field, in a manner that has brought credit to the student-athlete, the institution and intercollegiate athletics. The student-athlete also must intend to continue academic work beyond the baccalaureate degree as a full-time or part-time graduate student.
In her freshman year, she represented the United States in the World Cross Country Championships in Turin, Italy. Smith was awarded the 2001 Eagle of the Year, the highest athletic award at BC, by the Boston College Athletic Department.
