Chestnut Hill, Mass. - The varsity eight crew, ranked sixth in the New England Region by the NCAA Women's Rowing Committee (May 8), used a second-place finish at the last weekend's New England Championship to earn their first national ranking for Boston College's women's rowing team.
Enjoying their inaugural year as a varsity sport, the varsity eight rowed a 6:28.99 at the New England Championship. Williams won the race with a time of 6:24.97. Placing after Boston College was Wesleyan in third, Colby in fourth New Hampshire in fifth and Wellesley in sixth.
Ranked first in the region is Brown followed by Yale, Boston University, Harvard and Northeastern.
Boston College women's rowing was a club sport for 13 years, the team became a varsity sport in the fall of 2001. Since varsity crews are only eligible for rankings, the May 8 ranking is the first time that the Eagles have received recognition in the rankings.
"We are very excited. The team has worked very hard all season and a perfect way to be recognized for all their hard work is by earning our first ranking, especially when it comes during our first season as a varsity program," says head coach Steve Fiske.
The Boston College women's rowing team returns to action on Friday, May 1, when they travel Philadelphia, Pa. to compete in the DAD Vail Championship. The three-day event will take place on the Schuylkill River.
