Boston College head men's basketball coach Al Skinner has been selected to serve as an assistant coach for Team USA in the 2001 World University Games, according to an announcement made by USA Basketball.
Skinner will work with Jerry Dunn, the Penn State head coach who is serving as Team USA's head coach in this tournament. Mississippi head coach Rod Barnes will join Skinner as an assistant coach.
The 2001 World University Games will be held in Beijing, China from August 22-September 1. The United States owns a 40-game winning streak at the World University Games, and has captured six consecutive gold medals.
Skinner led Boston College to a 27-5 mark in 2000-01. The Eagles captured the BIG EAST East Division regular-season crown and the 2001 BIG EAST Championship Tournament title. Skinner earned numerous national coach of the year accolades at year's end.
The World University Games, held every two years and organized by the International University Sports Federation, is a multi-sport competition open to men and women between the ages of 17 and 28 who are, or have been within the past year, a student at a college or university. The basketball competition, which features collegiate teams from 28 countries, has been divided into eight preliminary round pools. Placed into Pool B, the United States will face Iran, South Africa and Turkey in preliminary round play.

While invitations have not yet been sent, there is a strong likelihood that Boston College All-America guard Troy Bell will be invited to attend the 2001 USA Basketball Men's National Team Trials, which will be used to select both the 2001 USA Men's World University Games Team and the 2001 FIBA World Championship for Young Men Team. The trials will be held June 1-3 at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo.
