CHESTNUT HILL, MASS. - The Boston College men's lacrosse team came out of the gates smoking in a game played Wednesday evening at Alumni Stadium versus the University of Vermont. The Eagles' fast start could not be sustained for a full 60 minutes, for Vermont won a hard fought 16-7 decision.
Sophomore David Bartholomew (Ithaca, NY), on a pretty feed from senior Andy Koch (Rye, NY), netted the game's first goal just 14 seconds into the contest.
The early goal propelled the Eagles toward a solid half of lacrosse. Late first-quarter goals by senior Tom Smith (Simsbury, CT) and junior Rory Smith (Avon, CT) kept the Eagles close to the offensive-minded Catamounts.
Trailing 4-3 heading into the second stanza, senior standout James Garth (Fort Worth, TX) was responsible for keeping the game close. He found the back of the net at 10:45 from fellow senior Mike Adair (New Canaan, CT). Garth's second goal of the quarter came at 2:45 from classmate Taylor Whitman (Oldwick, NJ). His third and final goal of the second was unassisted at 1:45.
The Catamounts, however, were able to keep the Eagles at bay. Senior Kip Edwards notched three goals and two assists in the first half for Vermont. As a result, Edwards and his teammates were able to head to the lockers with a 9-6 advantage.
The second half, much to the dismay of Boston College, was a different story. Unable to gain any offensive momentum, the Eagles struggled to keep the game in hand. Edwards netted an additional two goals for the Catamounts, while his teammates matched his offensive prowess.
The loss drops the Eagles to 0-7 on the season, while the Catamounts run their record to an impressive 6-2.
Boston College next travels to Canisius on Saturday, April 14. The game is slated to begin at Noon.
