CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - The Boston College women's basketball team held its annual awards banquet on Tuesday night, April 9. Several players were honored for their play this season and the senior class -- Jamie Cournoyer and Danielle O'Banion - was honored for its four years of service to the program.
Junior Becky Gottstein was honored as the team's most valuable player, presented by assistant coach Kelly Cole. The 6-1 forward led the squad in scoring, rebounding and field goal percentage. The Albany, N.Y. native was a second team All-BIG EAST selection at the conclusion of the season. She was one of only two players to rank in the top 5 in both scoring and rebounding in the BIG EAST.
Junior Nicole Conway received the team's most improved player award, presented by assistant coach Bill Gould. The 5-11 wing player improved in all offensive categories this season. She more than doubled both her scoring and rebounding averages, while showing stark improvement in her field goal percentage, three-point field goal percentage, assists, steals and block. The Glenmont, N.Y. native started all but the first five games of the season and averaged over 30.6 minutes per game.
Senior Danielle O'Banion was presented with the coaches' award by associate head coach Pam Borton. A team co-captain, she played in 15 games this season after suffering a severe ankle sprain. The Arlington, Va. Native was one of the team's top three-point threats, connecting on 41.0 percent of her shots this season. Over her career, O'Banion registered 59.4 percent of her total points off the three-pointer.
O'Banion also received two academic awards, the Academic Achievement and Academic Excellence awards.
Senior Jamie Cournoyer was recognized with the Academic Advisor's Award for best utilizing the Learning Resources for Student-Athletes programs and staff.
Head Coach Cathy Inglese honored Fast Break Club president Warren Zola with the team's "Sixth Man" Award for his dedication to the team. A former Assistant Athletic Director at Boston College and an ardent supporter of the women's basketball program, Zola assumed the booster club's presidency one year ago. The club saw its membership increase and its efforts played a substantial role in the increase in season ticket sales. The Eagles set a record for home attendance this season, averaging 2,668 fans per game.
