CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Freshman forward Tony Voce scored the game's lone as Boston College defeated Merrimack College, 1-0, in front of 2,994 fans at Kelley Rink. The goal, at 1:16 of the second period, lifted the Eagles over the Warriors in the first game of a best-of-three series in the HOCKEY EAST quarterfinals.
After a scoreless first period, Eagle defenseman Brooks Orpik picked up the puck along the boards and fed it front of the net. Freshman Chuck Kobasew tipped it to a surging Voce who netted his ninth goal of the season.
BC (27-8-2, 17-5-2) goalkeeper Scott Clemmensen registered his third shutout of the season and 13th of his career, stopping 21 shots on the night. Merrimack (14-19-4, 7-14-3) goalkeeper Tom Welby made 31 saves in the loss.
The Eagles successfully killed off the Warriors' only power play opportunity while BC went 0-4 on its man-advantages.
The two teams will meet in game two of the series on Saturday, Mar. 10, in a 7 p.m. tilt at Kelley Rink.
