Softball Tops Furman, 6-3

SAN DIEGO - Boston College scored the first six runs of the game and withstood a Furman rally to claim a 6-3 victory in the first game of the Aztec Invitational.
The Eagles, which collected 15 hits on the afternoon wasted little time getting on the board. The Eagles opened the game with three consecutive hits, including a two-RBI triple by catcher Summer Jarratt to take a 2-0 lead. Jarratt scored one batter later on a sacrifice fly by third baseman Lisa Fischer and Boston College led 3-0.
In the second inning, the Eagles added a run when shortstop Cara Blumfield singled home Jacqui Goodchild to give Boston College a 4-0 advantage.
The Eagles added to the lead in the fifth inning on the strength of three doubles. Fischer, Jennifer Perrotta and Erin Mackey doubled in the frame, with Perrotta and Mackey picking up RBIs to givB Boston College a 6-0 lead. That appeared to be more than enough for Eagle starter Kimberly Ryan. Ryan pitched five perfect frames, recording eight strikeouts, before encountering trouble In the sixth inning.
Following a walk, Furman belted out four consecutive singles. LaKerah Barr and Kristin Whik each had run producing singles to cut the deficit to 6-2. Kelli Leachman drew a bases loaded walk to cut the deficit to three runs, before relief pitcher Brooke Shull was able to get out of the jam.
The first two batters reached base in the Furman seventh, but Tekae Malandris struck out the next two batters and Jarratt picked off a runner to end the threat,
Boston College improves to 6-6 overall while Furman fell to 1-9.
