Gionta Named Walter Brown Award Winner

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Senior forward Brian Gionta was named the winner of the 2001 Walter Brown Award, given annually by the Gridiron Club on Greater Boston to New England's outstanding American-born college hockey player. He shares the award with New Hampshire goalkeeper Ty Conklin.
Gionta is HOCKEY EAST's leading scorer this season with 51 points on 31 goals and 20 assists in 38 games. His 31 goals leads the nation. He is Boston College's career leader in goals scored with 121 and is second in career scoring with 229 points. Gionta is 10 points shy of David Emma's record 239 points.
The Rochester, N.Y. native is a three-time All-American and two-time Hobey Baker finalist. He has been named HOCKEY EAST Player of the Month twice this season, the only player to be so honored. He is also a three-time HOCKEY EAST Player of the Week and was the league's Rookie of the Year in 1998.
Gionta is the 19th Boston College player to receive the Walter Brown Award. Last season, Mike Mottau earned his second honor is as many years.
The second-ranked Eagles are 28-8-2 overall and won the HOCKEY EAST regular-season crown with a 17-5-2 mark in league games. Boston College will next face UMass-Lowell in the HOCKEY EAST Tournament Semifinals on Friday, Mar. 16, at 7 p.m. at the FleetCenter.
