
Hockey Defeats Northeastern, Earns HOCKEY EAST Title

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Senior captain Brian Gionta and his classmates were honored before their final home game in Kelley Rink. They were also honored at game's end.
Gionta netted two goals and senior Marty Hughes added two assists to lead Boston College to a 6-3 win over Northestern, capping their home careers in fine fashion and capturing the HOCKEY EAST regular-season championship at the same time. HOCKEY EAST commissioner Joe Bertagna presented BC head coach Jerry York with the league trophy in a post-game ceremony on the ice.
The 2000-01 season marks the seventh time Boston College has won the HOCKEY EAST regular-season title, the first time since 1990-91.
Northeastern opened the scoring when Graig Mischler converted a feed from Mike Ryan and John Peterman. BC junior Jeff Giuliano evened the score with a power-play tally at 19:29 of the first period.
Northeastern (13-16-4, 7-12-4) struck again just 1:30 into the second on a Chris Lynch goal, but the Eagles answered with three consecutive goals to take a 4-2 lead after two periods. Gionta and freshmen Ty Hennes and Chuck Kobasew registered the BC goals.
BC (25-8-2, 16-5-2) continued the scoring in the third period as Gionta netted his second of the game and nation-leading 29th of the season to give BC a 5-2 cushion. Freshman Brett Peterson scored his first collegiate goal at 8:45 to finish the Eagles' offense. Trevor Reschny scored a late goal for Northeastern.
BC senior goalkeeper Scott Clemmensen made 21 saves, while Northeastern's Jason Braun stopped 39 shots.
Boston College secured the top seed in the HOCKEY EAST playoffs slated to begin on Thursday, Mar. 8. Boston College will open play on Friday, Mar. 9 in a home contest against an opponent yet to be determined.
The Eagles will close out the regular season on Sunday, Mar. 4 at Boston University in a 7 p.m. game.
