PROVIDENCE, R. I. - Providence College ended Boston College's six-game winning streak, defeating the Eagles, 5-3, in HOCKEY EAST action before a crowd of 3,030 at PC's Schneider Arena.
Providence (16-7-4, 10-5-2) got on the board at 8:50 of the first period. The Friars' Doug Wright took advantage of a two-on-none situation, scoring a goal to give the Friars a 1-0 lead.
Boston College (21-7-1, 13-4-1) answered with three minutes remaining in the first period when freshman forward Chuck Kobasew scored on the power play to even the score at 1-1. For Kobasew it was the 12th game in a row that he registered a point.
Despite being outshot 11-5, the second period belonged to Providence. The Friars' Shawn Weiman and Peter Fregoe each scored one goal to push the Friars lead to 3-1 after two periods.
The Eagles pulled to within one goal at 3:47 of the third period as freshman forward Ben Eaves scored a power-play goal to make the score 3-2. Senior forward Marty Hughes assisted on each of the Eagle's first two goals.
Boston College went 2-6 with the man advantage and killed both of Providence's power play chances.
Junior forward Ales Dolinar and Eaves each scored third-period goals, but Providence's Cody Loughlean's goal at 9:45 proved to be the difference. BC pulled goaltender Scott Clemmensen with 1:33 remaining, but could not score the equalizer.
Fregoe added an empty-net goal with 16 seconds remaining.
The Eagles - who share the top spot in this week's national poll with Michigan State - return to action on Monday, February 12th, when they play in the championship game of the 49th Annual Beanpot Tournament against Boston University. Game time at the FleetCenter is 8 p.m.
