BOSTON, Mass. - Boston College defeated Boston University, 5-3, to claim its 12th Beanpot championship in front of 17,953 fans at the FleetCenter. The title was the first for BC since 1994, and broke a streak of six straight Beanpot championship game victories by BU. For the BC seniors it was their first Beanpot, and the first for head coach Jerry York.
The Eagles broke out of the gate early, as freshman defenseman J. D. Forrest scored an unassisted goal off a hard slapshot from the point to give BC a 1-0 lead at the 9:33 mark of the first period.
Sophomore forward Krys Kolanos doubled the Eagles' advantage at 13:12 of the first period, beating BU goaltender Jason Tapp with a one-handed goal on Tapp's right side while holding off a Terrier defender.
The Eagles added their third goal at 4:27 of the second frame. Freshman forward Chuck Kobasew tallied his 18th goal of the season to give BC the 3-0 lead. Sophomore defenseman Bill Cass and Kolanos assisted on the goal.
Boston University (12-14-2, 8-8-2) climbed back into the game with two unanswered goals midway through the second period. Freshmen Frantisek Skladany and Kenny Magowan scored goals at 9:22 and 15:41, respectively, to pull BU to within one goal at 3-2.
Boston College (22-7-1, 13-4-1) pushed the lead back to two goals thanks to senior defenseman Rob Scuderi, who scored an unassisted goal after BU failed to clear the puck down the ice. Scuderi skated up the left side and deposited the puck in the back of the net to give BC a 4-2 lead with 17:41 remaining in the game.
BU junior Mike Pandolfo answered for the Terriers just 1:19 later, cleaning up a rebound in front of BC goaltender Scott Clemmensen to make the score 4-3.
Freshman forward Ben Eaves provided the Eagles with all the insurance they would need at 12:31, scoring his ninth goal of the season to give BC a 5-3 lead.
Clemmensen made 17 saves for his fifth career Beanpot victory. Tapp stopped 26 Eagle shots in defeat.
Kolanos garnered Beanpot MVP honors after his one goal and one assist effort. Clemmensen took home the Eberly Award, given annually to the goalie with the best save percentage in the Beanpot.
