February 5th & 12th, 2001
FleetCenter - Boston, MA
First Round Game Boston College faces off against Harvard in the opening round of the 49th annual Beanpot Tournament on Monday, February 5. The Eagles, who are looking for their first Beanpot title since 1994, come into the contest ranked number two in both the USCHO.com poll and the USA Today/American Hockey Magazine poll. Harvard is in the "also receiving votes" category of both polls. The game can be heard locally on WTKK-FM 96.9, and seen regionally on ATT-3 Broadband. Game time at the FleetCenter is 5 p.m.
The Series Boston College and Harvard have played 101 games in a series that began during the 1918-19 season. BC holds a 56-41-4 advantage. Under Head Coach Jerry York, the Eagles have a 7-2-1 mark. Earlier this season BC defeated the Crimson, 3-2, as the Eagles overcame a late one-goal deficit to send the game into overtime, where freshman Chuck Kobasew netted the game-winner. Last season the two teams met once, with BC defeating the Crimson 3-0 at Kelley Rink on Dec. 10. In that game Ales Dolinar scored two goals, including one short-handed tally, and Scott Clemmensen stopped all 24 Harvard shots to lead the Eagles to its second-straight shutout.
Please Take Note * Krys Kolanos will miss today's first-round game with a right shoulder injury suffered in the Eagles' 4-3 win over UML on Feb. 2
* BC's current five-game win streak is the longest win streak of the season. The Eagles started the year 4-0...BC is 16-0 when scoring 4+ goals...four of BC's first-period goals have been scored within the first 90 seconds of the game.
* Brian Gionta and Kolanos are the Eagles' leaders in scoring in Beanpot games. In six games, Gionta has three goals and two assists for five points. Kolanos has three goals and one assist, all coming in the Eagles' 6-0 first round win over Northeastern in last year's Beanpot.
* Freshman forward Chuck Kobasew is currently on a 10 game point scoring streak. It is the Eagles longest scoring streak this season. In the last 10 games, Kobasew has registered six goals and 10 assists.
* Gionta, Kobasew and Kolanos are 1-2-3 in league scoring through 17 games. Gionta leads the league with 27 points. Kobasew is second with 24 points. Kolanos is right behind with 23 points.
* In the past five games, Gionta has scored 12 points. He tallied two goals and one assist in both wins against Providence on Jan. 19 and 20. He scored five goals in the first period vs. Maine on Jan. 27. In the five-game stretch, Gionta registered 10 goals and two assists. He scored two shorthanded goals, three game-winning goals and two power-play goals.
* BC has won 20 games for the fourth straight season, only the second time that's happened in BC hostory (1983-84 - 1986-87)
Gionta Catches Fire with Five First-Period Goals vs. Maine Brian Gionta had a game - or a period - for the ages on Jan. 27, scoring five goals in the first period of the Eagles' 7-2 victory over Maine. The feat, believed to be an all-time modern record for goals in a period, set a number of team and league records. The senior captain:
* Tied the BC career goals record of 112 held by David Emma.
* Set a BC record for career hat tricks (nine).
* Set a BC record for career shorthanded goals (nine).
* Set a record for HOCKEY EAST goals in a period (five).
* Tied the HOCKEY EAST mark for goals in a game (five).
Thanks to his five-goal performance, Gionta moved into third place on BC's all-time scoring list with 214 points, passing Joe Mullen, who tallied 212 points from 1975-79. He managed a natural hat trick - goals at even strength, shorthanded and on the power-play - by the 14:37 mark of the first. He was named the HOCKEY EAST player of the week for the second consecutive week.
Coach York Jerry York is in his seventh season as the Eagles' head coach. He heads into Monday night's game as the sixth-winningest coach in NCAA history. With the Eagles' 6-1 win at UMass-Lowell on Saturday, Nov. 4, York joined an elite group of five other coaches who have 600 or more career victories. His career record stands at 613-442-54 (.577). His record at Boston College is 146-97-20 (.593). In HOCKEY EAST games York's teams are 86-59-15 (.584). He has led his team to the NCAA Tournament eight times, including three consecutive appearances by Boston College in the Frozen Four (1998-2000). His 1983-84 Bowling Green squad finished 34-8-2 and won the national championship.
Eagle Newcomers Update This season's freshman class has been the class of HOCKEY EAST this season. Chuck Kobasew and Tony Voce combined to earn Rookie of the Week honors four consecutive weeks in November. It was a feat that had not been accomplished by one conference team since the 1992-93 season, when Maine had four straight Rookie of the Week honorees. So far this season the freshman class has accounted for 35 goals and 60 assists. They have accounted for 30.7% of the teams' goal scoring, and 31.7 % of the Eagles' overall scoring this season.
York Selected as National Coach of the Year in Hockey On January 9, 2001, Boston College head coach Jerry York was selected as the ice hockey National Coach of the Year for the year 2000 by the United States Olympic Committee. Forty-four Olympic and Pan American sports each named a National and Developmental Coach of the Year, and each was honored at the fifth annual National Coaching Recognition Weekend in New York on Saturday, Jan. 13. The National Coaches of the Year winners were selected after strong showings at major event competitions for their respective sports.
