Women's Basketball Closes Regular Season With Fifth-Straight Win

MORGANTOWN, W. Va. - Behind double-figure scoring from five players, Boston College closed out the regular season with a five-game winning streak by defeating West Virginia 85-67.
Becky Gottstein led all scorers with 18 points, followed by Alicia Shields' career-high 17 and Amber Jacobs' 16. Janelle McManus came off the bench to score 15, while Jamie Cournoyer added 11.
West Virginia scored the game's first basket and it was the team's only lead of the night. Soon BC had opened a 13-point lead halfway through the first half. The Eagles extended it to 16, but the Mountaineers clawed back to within13 at the half. Gottstein had 12 at the break, followed by Shields' 11.
Boston College began the second half on a 14-0 run that increased its advantage to 28 points just 4:30 into the half. West Virginia mounted a strong defense and climbed within 19, but the Eagles regained composure and brought the lead back up to 23 with 3:54 to play. Head coach Cathy Inglese continued running the bench into the game and the fresh players held the Mountaineers to an 18-point game.
Four players scored in double figures for West Virginia, led by Katie Bulger's 17. Darya Kudryavtseva added 16 and Brandi Batch scored 14. Alia Clark netted 10 off the bench. West Virginia was a perfect 22-for-22 from the free throw line in the game.
With the win, BC finished the regular season at 13-14 and 7-9 in the BIG EAST. It will next play Miami in the first round of the BIG EAST tournament at 6 p.m. on Saturday, March 3 in Storrs, Conn.
