CHESNUT HILL, Mass. - Junior forward Becky Gottstein (Albany, NY) earned her second-straight BIG EAST women's basketball Co-Player of the Week and freshman Janelle McManus (Belle Harbor, NY) was named BIG EAST women's basketball Rookie of the Week on Feb. 26. Gottstein shares her honor with Connecticut forward Swin Cash.
Gottstein powered the Eagles to back-to-back victories over Georgetown and Pittsburgh last week. In the win over the Hoyas, she recorded 23 points and grabbed 14 rebounds in 38 minutes. She went six-for-11 from the floor and 11-for-13 from the free throw line. She recorded her eighth double-double of the season by the end of the first half. Against the Panthers, she played all 45 minutes of the overtime win, scoring a season-high 25 points and grabbing eight rebounds.
Gottstein has won two Co-Player of the Week awards this season and has been honored by the league 11 times in her career. She has been a Player of the Week five times and was a six-time Rookie of the Week during the 1998-99 season.
Currently, Gottstein leads the Eagles, and is third in the BIG EAST, in scoring with her 16.3 points per game average. She also leads the club, and is second in the league, in rebounding with her 9.5 rebounds per game average. She has led the team in scoring in nine of the last 13 games and in rebounding in 14 of the last 17 games.
McManus led all scorers against Georgetown with 24 points, a career-high. She shot eight-for-10 from the floor and went four-for-five from behind the three-point arch. The freshman guard played 31 minutes off the bench at the point guard position. In the Pittsburgh win, with 10 seconds left in overtime and the Eagles down by two, McManus dribbled down the lane, hit a pull-up jumper and then added the ensuing free throw to give the Eagles the win.
This is McManus' second Rookie of the Week honor this season. She also won the award on Dec. 11 for her play against then No. 2 Tennessee and La Salle.
McManus is the team's third leading scorer, averaging 9.4 points per game overall and 10.5 points in league games. She also leads the club in three-points, connecting on 34-of-86 attempts.
Boston College closes out the regular season with a road game at West Virginia on Tuesday, Feb. 27 at 7 p.m. The Eagles will then head to the BIG EAST tournament, starting Saturday, March 3 in Storrs, Conn.
