CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Boston College senior captain Brian Gionta tallied five points -- three goals and two assists -- in two games against UMass-Amherst to earn HOCKEY EAST Co-Player of the Week honors for the week ending February 25.
Gionta registered one goal and one assist in the Eagles' 3-3 tie with the Minutemen on Feb. 23. The following night, the senior forward notched two goals and one assist in BC's 6-3 win over UMass-Amherst.
Gionta's five-point weekend raises his season point total to 46 points -- 27 goals and 19 assists -- in 34 games. He is tied with North Dakota's Bryan Lundbohm as the nation's top goal scorer.
Gionta and the Eagles are currently in first place in the HOCKEY EAST standings. BC needs one point in its remaining two regular-season games to claim the league title. Boston College last won the HOCKEY EAST regular-season crown in 1990-91.
Boston College returns to action on Thursday, March 1 when it hosts Northeastern in Kelley Rink. Game time is 7 p.m.
