HAMMOND, La. - The Boston College softball team kicked off its weekend in Louisiana with a single game against Southeastern Louisiana on Friday afternoon. The game was delayed as the team had problems getting to the game due to heavy traffic. Eagles fell, 1-0, behind excellent pitching by the Lions' Susan Hill and her complete game one-hitter.
Hill sat down the first eight batters she faced before walking Lisa Fischer and Summer Jarratt to start the third. She got out of the inning as Jarratt was forced out at second. BC got its lone hit in the top of the fifth when Fischer hit a single with two outs and one on base. She reached second (and Sara Kellner advanced to second) after Jarratt was hit by a pitch, but Hill got out of the jam with a fly out.
The Lions got all the offense they needed in the bottom of the fifth when Brandy Neal singled in Brooke Kostic. Eagle starter Kimberly Ryan walked Kostic to open the inning, who later advanced to second on a fielder's choice before coming home on Neal's hit.
In the top of the seventh, the Eagle mounted a rally. Alison Erbig was walked and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Leah Kamataris grounded out to third and Erbig tried to beat the throw home, but was thrown out at home on the advance.
Ryan suffered her first loss of the season and moved to 2-1 overall, but only allowed four hits while striking out two and walking one in four and a third innings. Tekae Malandris entered in relief and struck out three in an inning and two thirds. Hill pitched the full seven innings and struck out four and matched the total with four base on balls for the win, her sixth of the season.
BC evened its record at 3-3 with the loss and will next participate in the Louisiana Classics, hosted by the University of Louisiana - Lafayette. The Eagles will face Centenary twice and the Lady Cajuns once on Saturday and then play a double-header with ULL on Sunday.
