Hockey Earns 3-3 Tie with UMass-Amherst

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Junior Mike Johnson recorded 60 saves, including six in the overtime session, as UMass-Amherst earned a 3-3 tie with second-ranked Boston College before a sellout crowd of 7,770 fans at Kelley Rink.
Johnson made 20 saves in the opening period, 13 saves in the second period, and 21 saves in the third period. Boston College (23-8-2) outshot UMass-Amherst, 63-29.
UMass-Amherst never trailed in the contest. The Minutemen took a one-goal lead three times, only to see the host Eagles knot the game each time.
BC junior Jeff Giuliano tallied the game's final goal at 7:08 of the third period to secure the tie for the Eagles.
UMass-Amherst senior Kris Wallis opened the scoring at 3:38 of the first period. BC senior captain Brian Gionta netted his 25th goal of the season -- on the power play -- at 18:45 of the same stanza to tie the game at 1-1.
UMA senior R.J. Gates gave the Minutemen a 2-1 lead at 9:10 of the middle period. After BC sophomore Krys Kolanos struck for his 22nd goal of the season at 10:33, UMA (7-20-4) regained the advantage on sophomore Tim Turner's goal at 16:53.
BC senior Scott Clemmensen made 26 stops.
Boston College, which faces UMass-Amherst again on Saturday night (Feb. 24), remains in first place in the HOCKEY EAST standings. The Eagles have a one-point advantage over second-place Providence with three games remaining to play. Providence has two games remaining on its schedule.
