Track And Field Competes In Day One Of BIG EAST

SYRACUSE, N.Y. - The Boston College men's and women's track and field team competed in the first day of the BIG EAST Championships at the Carrier Dome, in Syracuse, N.Y. The women's team sits in sixth place of 11 teams with 20 points and the men sit in 14th place, with no points.
With a time of 5:02, Shannon Smith ran to a third place finish in the mile. Following in fifth was Laura Smith and Jen Kramer finished ninth. Taking second in the 5000-meter race, Maggie Guiney ran a 16:29. Julie Spolidoro followed in seventh and Danielle Jelley took 11thin the same event. Taking 12th place, Jen Donovan ran the 1000-meter race. In the 400-meter dash, Jen Vendetti finished 16th. Zoey O'Sullivan finished 19th in the 60-meter dash.
Winning the distance relay, Katie Ryan, Vendetti, Laura Smith and Shannon Smith finished with a time of 11:32.24.
In third place, Jonathan Ordway ran a 6.92 in the preliminary round of the 60-meter dash. In the 400-meter dash, Mark Johnson finished in 12th place. Taking 14th place, Jeffrey Normant competed in the 500-meter dash. Finishing back-to-back in the 800-meter race, Vernon Mickle finished in 12th place and Dan Fitgerald took 14th. In the 1000-meter run, Michael McKenzie finished 16. In the 5000 race, Andrew Shaffer took 16th. Anthony Beirne took 14th place in the 35 pound weight throw.
Georgetown sits in first place in the men's competition with 41 points. On the women's side, Connecticut is in front with 33 points.
The final day of the BIG EAST Championships will begin at 11:00 a.m. at the Carrier Dome in Syracuse, N.Y, tomorrow, Sun., Feb., 18.
