Men's Track Competes At New Englands

BOSTON, Mass. - The Boston College men's track and field team competed in the New England Championships on Fri., Feb 23 and Sat., Feb. 24 at Boston University in Boston, Mass. The Eagles took ninth place overall out of 28 teams.
In the 55-meter finals, Jonathan Ordway ran a 6.51, taking a fifth place finish. Ordway's best time of the day came in his first race running a 6.50. Setting a personal best in the 200-meter, Ordway's first run of the day was 22.06 and later finished sixth overall with a time of 22.48.
In the 500-meter run, Jeff Normant ran a 1:04.79 in the final for a fifth place finish. Earlier in the preliminary Normant ran a 1:04.57. In the 800-meter run, Vernon Mickle took third overall with his best time of the day, 1:52.98. Michael McKenzie followed in fourth with a time of 1:53.69.
Running his best time of the day, Shawn Wallace ran a 2:30.50 in the 1,000 meter, finishing in fourth place. In the pentathlon, Gabe Verdaguer collected 3004 points for 11th place.
In preliminary action, Mark Johnson ran a 50.18 in the 400-meter dash. Dan Fitzgerald ran a 1:53.6, in the 800-meter run. While, Kevin Lyons ran a 2:34.43 in the 1,000-meter. In the mile, Byron Gartell ran a 4:18.83 and Brian Mahoney ran a 8:40.57 in the 3,000-meter race.
Winning the 2001 Indoor New England Track and Field Championship was Connecticut followed by Northeastern in second and Boston University in third.
The Boston College men's track and field team will next compete at the ICAAAA Championship at the Reggie Lewis Center in Boston on Sat. March 3 and Sun. March 4. Time to be announced.
