CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Sophomore Troy Bell scored 26 points and freshman Ryan Sidney netted 17 points to lead ninth-ranked Boston College to an 81-73 victory over Providence in a battle of the top two teams in the BIG EAST Conference's East Division.
The host Eagles led 44-32 at halftime and withstood a furious second-half rally by Providence to record their 10th league victory of the season. The Friars began the second half with a 20-5 run to take a 52-49 advantage with 12:43 remaining.
After BC (19-3, 10-2 BIG EAST) battled back to take a 59-55 lead, Providence ran off six consecutive points to take its final advantage at 60-59. The Friars evened the score three times -- the final time coming at 65-65.
BC's Kenny Harley scored the game's next four points and Bell added two free throws to give the Eagles a 71-65 advantage with 1:10 to play. PC (18-7, 9-4 BIG EAST) was never able to pull even in the final minute.
Junior John Linehan led PC scorers with 22 points. Sophomore Abdul Mills netted 19 points.
Game Notes: Boston College forced 20 PC turnovers, while committing 18 of its own. The Eagles' turnover total was its highest in 11 games (since 22 at Miami on Jan. 7, 2001) ... BC outrebounded Providence, 32-21. BC has now outrebounded each of its last four opponents ... BC shot 54.0 percent from the field, its third-highest percentage of the season and its highest percentage in a BIG EAST game since shooting 60.5 percent at Notre Dame on Jan. 12, 2000 ... BC made just two three-point field goals, its lowest total of the season ... BC recorded 12 steals, its 13th game this season with 10 or more steals ... Troy Bell was 7-for-7 from the free-throw line, marking the 12th time in his 49-game collegiate career that he was perfect from the line when attempting six or more shots ... BC has now scored 80 or more points in 12 game this season. The Eagles are 12-0 in those games.
