Tonight's Game: It's a battle of HOCKEY EAST heavyweights as first place Boston College hosts second place New Hampshire at Kelley Rink in a 7 p.m. game. Boston College comes into the game ranked second nationally in both the USA Today/American Hockey Magazine Poll and the USCHO.com poll. New Hampshire is ranked eighth in both polls. The game matches the leagues' top offense (BC's 4.44 goals per game, 4.17 in league games) and its top defense (UNH's 2.10 goals against average, 2.34 in league games). The Eagles and Wildcats are also 1-2 in the league penalty kill department. BC leads HOCKEY EAST with a .918 kill percentage, while UNH in second with a .893 mark.
Tight Series Race: Boston College and New Hampshire will face off for the 99th time tonight. The Wildcats hold the series advantage by the slimmest of margins, 47-46-5. The Eagle seniors have faced the Wildcats 12 times, and have a 5-6-1 record in those games. Since the first season of HOCKEY EAST play in 1984, BC and UNH have met 57 times, with the Wildcats holding a slight 28-25-4 lead. In that span, BC has a 13-9-2 record against New Hampshire at Kelley Rink. Earlier this season (Nov. 18) BC fell to UNH, 4-1 at Kelley Rink, when the Wildcats scored two empty-net goals and two power-play goals to take the first game of the season series. Last season BC and UNH split four meetings, with each team winning on its home ice. BC defeated the Wildcats, 2-1, in the HOCKEY EAST Tournament Semifinals at the FleetCenter on March 17.
Please Take Note: * The Eagles have not lost two games in a row this season - each of BC's losses this season has been followed by a victory - by a combined margin of 43-20.
* Freshman forward Chuck Kobasew is currently on a 13-game point-scoring streak. It is the Eagles longest scoring streak this season. In the last 13 games, Kobasew has registered nine goals and 10 assists.
* Freshman forward Ben Eaves has an eight-game point-scoring streak of his own. He has scored six goals and five assists in the past eight games.
* In games played through Feb. 11, BC players lead the nation in three offensive categories - senior forward Brian Gionta is tops nationally in goals scored with 24, Gionta also leads the nation in shorthanded goals with five, and Kobasew is tied for the top spot in game-winning goals with six.
* In the past eight games, Gionta has scored 16 points. He tallied two goals and one assist in both wins against Providence on Jan. 19 and 20. He scored five goals in the first period vs. Maine on Jan. 27. In BC's Beanpot win over Harvard on Feb. 5, he had one goal and two assists. In the Beanpot title game, Gionta tallied one assist. In the eight-game stretch, Gionta has registered 11 goals and five assists. He scored two shorthanded goals, three game-winning goals and two power-play goals.
* BC is 18-0 when scoring four-or-more goals. UNH has given up four or more goals only six times this season. They've gone 1-4-1 in those games.
* BC has won 20 games for the fourth straight season, only the second time that's happened in BC history (1983-84 - 1986-87).
Coach York: Jerry York is in his seventh season as the Eagles' head coach. He heads into Monday night's game as the sixth-winningest coach in NCAA history. With the Eagles' 6-1 win at UMass-Lowell on Saturday, Nov. 4, York joined an elite group of five other coaches who have 600 or more career victories. His career record stands at 616-442-54 (.578). His record at Boston College is 148-97-20 (.596). In HOCKEY EAST games York's teams are 87-59-15 (.587). He has led his team to the NCAA Tournament eight times, including three consecutive appearances by Boston College in the Frozen Four (1998-2000). His 1983-84 Bowling Green squad finished 34-8-2 and won the national championship.
Eagle Newcomers Update: This season's freshman class has been the class of HOCKEY EAST this season. Chuck Kobasew and Tony Voce combined to earn Rookie of the Week honors four consecutive weeks in November. It was a feat that had not been accomplished by one conference team since the 1992-93 season, when Maine had four straight Rookie of the Week honorees. So far this season the freshman class has accounted for 42 goals and 64 assists. They have accounted for 33.3% of the teams' goal scoring, and 32.1 % of the Eagles' overall scoring this season.
Gionta Catches Fire with Five First-Period Goals vs. Maine: Brian Gionta had a game - or a period - for the ages on Jan. 27, scoring five goals in the first period of the Eagles' 7-2 victory over Maine. The feat, believed to be an all-time modern record for goals in a period, set a number of team and league records. The senior captain: * Tied the BC career goals record of 112 held by David Emma. * Set a BC record for career hat tricks (nine). * Set a BC record for career shorthanded goals (nine). * Set a record for HOCKEY EAST goals in a period (five). * Tied the HOCKEY EAST mark for goals in a game (five). Thanks to his five-goal performance, Gionta moved into third place on BC's all-time scoring list with 214 points, passing Joe Mullen, who tallied 212 points from 1975-79. He managed a natural hat trick - goals at even strength, shorthanded and on the power-play - by the 14:37 mark of the first. He was named the HOCKEY EAST player of the week for the second consecutive week.
BC vs. UNH - The First Meeting: Junior forward David Busch scored two goals and senior goaltender Ty Conklin made 37 saves to lift New Hampshire to a 4-1 HOCKEY EAST win over Boston College on Nov. 18 at Kelley Rink. New Hampshire broke open a close contest with two empty-net goals in the final minute. Boston College freshman Tony Voce opened the scoring at 8:45 of the first period. Senior Marty Hughes and junior Ales Dolinar assisted on the score. Busch evened the score at 17:36 of the first period, and netted the decisive goal - on the power play - at 15:29 of the middle period. Neither team scored again until Boston College pulled goaltender Scott Clemmensen with 45 seconds remaining. The Eagles were shorthanded when Clemmensen went to the bench. BC dominated the first period, outshooting the visiting Wildcats 18-6. Clemmensen finished with 24 saves.
York Selected as National Coach of the Year in Hockey: On January 9, 2001, Boston College head coach Jerry York was selected as the ice hockey National Coach of the Year for the year 2000 by the United States Olympic Committee. Forty-four Olympic and Pan American sports each named a National and Developmental Coach of the Year, and each was honored at the fifth annual National Coaching Recognition Weekend in New York on Saturday, Jan. 13. The National Coaches of the Year winners were selected after strong showings at major event competitions for their respective sports.
Fast Starts for the Eagles: Boston College has gotten off to fast starts in the majority of its games this season. The Eagles have scored in the first period in 24 of their 30 games, and have been the first team to score in 19 of those games. Seventeen of BC's 45 first-period goals have been scored within the first nine minutes of the period, and four of those have been scored within the first 90 seconds.
Forrest Competed with U.S. National Junior Team in World Junior Hockey Championship: Freshman defenseman J. D. Forrest was selected to compete with the U. S. National Junior Team that skated in the 2001 World Junior Hockey Championship in Moscow, Russia from Dec. 26 - Jan. 5. In six games, Forrest had one goal and one assist for the fifth-place U. S. team.
BC Hockey Signs Three Recruits: Three high school seniors have signed national letters of intent to play hockey at Boston College next season. John Adams, a 6-foot-2-inch defenseman from the Breck School in Golden Valley, Minn., Ryan Murphy, a 5-foot-11-inch forward from Huron High School in Ann Arbor, Mich., and Ryan Shannon, a 5-foot-9-inch forward from the Taft School in Watertown, Conn. will enter Boston College in the fall of 2001 and begin their collegiate playing careers in the 2001-02 season.
BC Class of 2001: This season's senior class experienced more success in its first three seasons than any other Boston College class entering their final year with the exception of the BC class of 1988, which won 85 games (.702 win percentage) through its first three seasons. The class of 2001 won 84 games in its first three seasons (.705 win percentage) and appeared in the Frozen Four each year, playing for the title twice. The only other BC class to appear in three consecutive Frozen Fours was the 1948-50 Eagles, a team that won BC's sole national championship in 1949.
Lephart, Allen Enjoy 6-on-5 Success : Boston College has pulled its goaltender and scored game-tying goals on five different occasions since the beginning of the 1999-2000 season. Senior assistant captains Mike Lephart and Bobby Allen have scored each of them. The Eagles ended up winning two of those games (including a 6-5 win over Michigan State in last year's NCAA West Regional), losing two, and tying one.
