Boston College Women Win Beanpot Consolation

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass.- Harvard's Jennifer Botterill scored the game-winning goal as the no. six ranked Crimson defeated the tenth ranked Northeastern, 4-3, in the 23rd annual women's ice hockey Beanpot Tournament, held at Boston College's Kelley Rink, in Conte Forum, in Chestnut Hill, Mass.
Jumping out to an early lead, Harvard scored the only goal of the first period. Scoring at the 18:20 Kalin Ingram scored the power play goal from Botterill.
Coming out strong in the second period, Northeastern used three goals to take the lead. Scoring first at 13:21, Betsy Dyke scored a short handed goal from Erica Achambeau. At 16:45 Jennifer Santorre scored, breaking the 1-1 tie. The goal was assisted by Colleen Coen and Lisa Giovanelli. Scoring Northeastern's third and what would prove to be their last goal, Kim Greene netted a shot at 19:46.
Harvard would start their come back at 4:48 in the third period when Botterill scored from Tammy Shewchuk and Pam Van Reesema. The goal was scored on a power play. Harvard's tying goal came less than two minutes later, when Tammy Shewchuk scored at 6:22. Assisting on the goal, which would send the championship game into overtime for the third year in a row, was Jamie Haggerman and Van Reesema.
Harvard's game winning goal came at 6:35, when Botterill netted her second goal of the game, fourth of the tournament, unassisted.
Collecting 27 saves for Harvard was Jessica Ruddrock. Stopping 39 for Northeastern was Erika Silva.
In the consolation game, which preceded the championship, Boston College defeated Boston University, 5-0. Collecting the first and game winning goal was Jen Buckley at 5:23 of the first period. Assisting on the goal was Kelly McManus and Renee Taylor. The Eagles scored two more goal in the first period. The first was by Thia Connolly and the second was by McManus. In the second and third period, Boston College would score one goal in each by Connoly and Jaclyn Kryzak, respectively.
In net for the Eagles, Amy Colletta stopped seven and Sharon Van Tuyl saved five. For the Terriers, Christy Beniot saved 30.
The 2001 Beanpot Most Valuable Player honors went to Harvard's Jennifer Botterill for her four goals and four assists in the tournament. The MVP was chosen by the media and coaches. The Joseph D. Bertagna award was awarded to Northeastern's Erika Silva for her 39 save and .409 save percentage.
