The Eagles, who are looking for their first Beanpot title since 1994, come into the contest tied for first nationally in the USA Today/American Hockey Magazine poll, and ranked second in the USCHO.com poll. The Series: Boston College and Boston University have played 205 games in a series that began during the 1917-18 season. BC trails in the series 85-105-15. Under Head Coach Jerry York, the Eagles have a 5-13-5 mark. BC and BU split their weekend home-and-home series earlier this season, with each team winning on its home ice. BU defeated the Eagles, 3-2, on Jan. 6, and BC returned the favor the next night, 5-2, at Kelley Rink. Last season the two teams met four times, with BU coming out on top, with a 2-1-1 record, including its 4-1 victory in the championship game of the Beanpot. The Eagles and Terriers have met 14 times in the Beanpot championship game, with the Terriers winning nine of those meetings.
Please Take Note:
* The Eagles have not lost two games in a row this season - each of BC's losses this season has been followed by a victory, by a combined margin of 38-17.
* BC and BU have met in the Beanpot finals 14 times. BU leads 9-5. BC has made 23 appearances in the Beanpot championship game, resulting in an 11-12 record.
* Brian Gionta and Krys Kolanos are the Eagles' leaders in scoring in Beanpot games. In seven games, Gionta has four goals and four assists for eight points. Kolanos has three goals and one assist, all coming in the Eagles' 6-0 first round win over Northeastern in last year's Beanpot.
* Freshman forward Chuck Kobasew is currently on a 12 game point scoring streak. It is the Eagles longest scoring streak this season. In the last 12 games, Kobasew has registered eight goals and 10 assists.
* In the past seven games, Gionta has scored 15 points. He tallied two goals and one assist in both wins against Providence on Jan. 19 and 20. He scored five goals in the first period vs. Maine on Jan. 27. In BC's Beanpot win over Harvard on Feb. 5, he had one goal and two assists. In the five-game stretch, Gionta registered 11 goals and four assists. He scored two shorthanded goals, three game-winning goals and two power-play goals.
* Gionta, Kobasew, and Kolanos are 1-2-3 in conference scoring through 18 games. Gionta-27, Kobasew 25, Kolanos 23.
* BC has won 20 games for the fourth straight season, only the second time that's happened in BC history (1983-84 - 1986-87).
Gionta Catches Fire with Five First-Period Goals vs. Maine: Brian Gionta had a game - or a period - for the ages on Jan. 27, scoring five goals in the first period of the Eagles' 7-2 victory over Maine. The feat, believed to be an all-time modern record for goals in a period, set a number of team and league records. The senior captain: * Tied the BC career goals record of 112 held by David Emma. * Set a BC record for career hat tricks (nine). * Set a BC record for career shorthanded goals (nine). * Set a record for HOCKEY EAST goals in a period (five). * Tied the HOCKEY EAST mark for goals in a game (five). Thanks to his five-goal performance, Gionta moved into third place on BC's all-time scoring list with 214 points, passing Joe Mullen, who tallied 212 points from 1975-79. He managed a natural hat trick - goals at even strength, shorthanded and on the power-play - by the 14:37 mark of the first. He was named the HOCKEY EAST player of the week for the second consecutive week.
Coach York: Jerry York is in his seventh season as the Eagles' head coach. He heads into Monday night's game as the sixth-winningest coach in NCAA history. With the Eagles' 6-1 win at UMass-Lowell on Saturday, Nov. 4, York joined an elite group of five other coaches who have 600 or more career victories. His career record stands at 615-442-54 (.578). His record at Boston College is 148-97-20 (.596). In HOCKEY EAST games York's teams are 87-59-15 (.587). He has led his team to the NCAA Tournament eight times, including three consecutive appearances by Boston College in the Frozen Four (1998-2000). His 1983-84 Bowling Green squad finished 34-8-2 and won the national championship.
Eagle Newcomers Update: This season's freshman class has been the class of HOCKEY EAST this season. Chuck Kobasew and Tony Voce combined to earn Rookie of the Week honors four consecutive weeks in November. It was a feat that had not been accomplished by one conference team since the 1992-93 season, when Maine had four straight Rookie of the Week honorees. So far this season the freshman class has accounted for 39 goals and 63 assists. They have accounted for 32.2% of the teams' goal scoring, and 31.9 % of the Eagles' overall scoring this season:
BC vs. BU - The First Two Meetings:
Boston University 3, Boston College 2 (Jan. 6, 2001 - Walter Brown Arena) - BU scored the first three goals of the game, two on the power play, and then withstood a furious BC rally to defeat the second-ranked Eagles, 3-2. The Terriers got first-period goals from John Sabo and Jack Baker, and a second-period score from Nick Gillis to take a 3-0 lead at 8:36 of the second frame. Boston College got on the board at 11:43 of the second on a power-play goal by Chuck Kobasew. BC trailed, 3-1, at the second intermission. The Eagles cut the deficit in half at 9:02 of the third period on a goal by Krys Kolanos. BC's defense held BU without a shot attempt for the first 12:55 of the third period, and the Eagles outshot the Terriers 17-3 in the period, and 34-18 for the game. BU goaltender Jason Tapp made 32 saves. Scott Clemmensen stopped 15 Terrier shots for the Eagles.
Boston College 5, Boston University 2 (Jan. 7, 2001 - Kelley Rink) - BC jumped out to a 4-0 second-period lead and held on to defeat BU, 5-2. Brian Gionta, moved to right wing before the game, scored two goals in a span of 3:21 midway through the second period to extend the lead to 4-0. BU got on the board at 16:11 of the second when Brian Collins scored a power-play goal. The Terriers scored their second power-play goal at 11:37 of the final period to make the score 4-2, but J. D. York Selected as National Coach of the Year in Hockey: On January 9, 2001, Boston College head coach Jerry York was selected as the ice hockey National Coach of the Year for the year 2000 by the United States Olympic Committee. Forty-four Olympic and Pan American sports each named a National and Developmental Coach of the Year, and each was honored at the fifth annual National Coaching Recognition Weekend in New York on Saturday, Jan. 13. The National Coaches of the Year winners were selected after strong showings at major event competitions for their respective sports.
Fast Starts for the Eagles: Boston College has gotten off to fast starts in the majority of its games this season. The Eagles have scored in the first period in 23 of their 29 games, and have been the first team to score in 18 of those games. Seventeen of BC's 40 first-period goals have been scored within the first nine minutes of the period, and four of those have been scored within the first 90 seconds.
ionta, Kobasew are Fair Barometers of Eagles' Success This Season: As Brian Gionta and Chuck Kobasew go, so go the Eagles. Boston College was a perfect 6-0 in November games in which both Gionta and Kobasew scored at least one point. Conversely, the Eagles were 0-2 in games in which neither player registered a point. For the season, their numbers are equally impressive: scoring: not scoring: Gionta 17-1 4-6-1 Kobasew 20-3 1-4-1
Forrest Competed with U.S. National Junior Team in World Junior Hockey Championship: Freshman defenseman J. D. Forrest was selected to compete with the U. S. National Junior Team that skated in the 2001 World Junior Hockey Championship in Moscow, Russia from Dec. 26 - Jan. 5. In six games, Forrest had one goal and one assist for the fifth-place U. BC Class of 2001: This season's senior class experienced more success in its first three seasons than any other Boston College class entering their final year with the exception of the BC class of 1988, which won 85 games (.702 win percentage) through its first three seasons. The class of 2001 won 84 games in its first three seasons (.705 win percentage) and appeared in the Frozen Four each year, playing for the title twice. The only other BC class to appear in three consecutive Frozen Fours was the 1948-50 Eagles, a team that won BC's sole national championship in 1949.
Lephart, Allen Enjoy 6-on-5 Success : Boston College has pulled its goaltender and scored game-tying goals on five different occasions since the beginning of the 1999-2000 season. Senior assistant captains Mike Lephart and Bobby Allen have scored each of them. The Eagles ended up winning two of those games (including a 6-5 win over Michigan State in last year's NCAA West Regional), losing two, and tying one.
Three Eagles Near Games-Played Mark: Three current Eagles have an opportunity to finish their careers with at least 164 games played, surpassing Mike Mottau's all-time mark of 163 appearances. Rob Scuderi's 155 games played moved him into eighth place on BC's all-time games played list. Bobby Allen is close behind with 153 games played. The Eagles will play at least nine more games this season (seven regular season and at least two tournament games) and as many as 15 games.
