CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Two Boston College forwards earned HOCKEY EAST accolades for their play during January. Senior Brian Gionta (Rochester, NY) earned Player of the Month honors, and freshman Chuck Kobasew (Osoyoos, British Columbia) garnered Rookie of the Month honors, leading BC to a 6-2 January record and first place in the HOCKEY EAST standings.
Gionta earned the award on the strength of a five-goal performance in the first period of BC's 7-2 win over Maine on January 27. In BC's sweep of Providence, Gionta set the pace, scoring two goals and one assist in each of the Eagles' wins - a 4-0 blanking of the Friars at Kelley Rink on Jan. 19, and a 4-1 victory at Schneider Arena on Jan. 20. Gionta scored both game-winning goals, and added one shorthanded goal.
Gionta, named the league's Player of the Week the last two weeks of the month, tallied 11 goals and three assists during January. The Player of the Month honor was the fourth of his career.
Kobasew scored at least one point in each of the Eagles' games in January. The league's top freshman scorer, Kobasew scored five goals and five assists during the month, including the game-winner in a 2-1 victory at UMass Lowell on Jan. 12. Overall he has scored in nine straight contests.
Kobasew continues to lead the team in power-play goals with eight, and is tied with Gionta for the team lead in game-winning goals with five.
The pair also garnered monthly honors for November, leading the Eagles to an identical 6-2 mark.
