DULUTH, Minn. - Freshman goaltender Matti Kaltiainen tied a Silverado Shootout record with saves in a game with 50 - including 27 in the second period - as Boston College claimed the 2001 tournament title with a 5-1 win over the host Minnesota-Duluth Bulldogs on Saturday night. With the win, BC improved to 10-6-2 on the season, while UMD fell to 7-12-1 overall.
The Eagles jumped out of the gates, posting a three-goal first period. Freshman Ryan Shannon put BC on the board at 4:20 when he intercepted a clearing pass in the Bulldog zone. He skated in alone from the top of the face-off circle, faked a shot right and then put the puck in under a sprawling Rob Anderson for a 1-0 score.
Senior assistant captain Ales Dolinar staked BC to a 2-0 lead when he intercepted a clearing pass at the blue line of UMD's defensive zone and skated in alone for the goal. His goal was unassisted at 11:00.
Sophomore defenseman J.D. Forrest closed the first-period scoring with his wrist shot from between the face-off circles. Classmate Tony Voce broke up another clearing attempt and sent Forrest in alone for the goal at 17:56.
UMD outshot the Eagles 28-6 in the second frame and got on the scoreboard with a 5x3 goal at 7:02. Andy Reierson knocked in a rebound. Judd Medak and Junior Lessard assisted on the goal.
Voce extended his goal-scoring streak to six games with his fourth shorthanded goal of the year at 10:15 of the third period. Senior captain Jeff Giuliano moved the puck out to Voce from the right boards in the Eagle zone. Voce came in with a defender on his back, but was able to break free and fire the shot in for the score.
Freshman Ryan Murphy added a late empty-net goal at 17:02 of the third to close out the scoring. Junior Anthony D'Arpino blocked a Bulldog shot right to Murphy, who released his attempt from center ice.
For the game, the Bulldogs outshot BC 51-29. UMD's Rob Anderson started the game and made seven saves, while Adam Coole made 17 saves after entering in the first period.
Boston College will return to action on January 6 when the team begins a two-game road trip to Yale and Massachusetts in New Haven. BC will take on the Bulldogs at the New Haven Coliseum at 7 p.m. on Sunday night before traveling to Amherst to face the Minutemen at 7 p.m. on Monday.
