Philadelphia, PA - The Boston College women's basketball team posted a 78-73 victory over Saint Joseph's Saturday afternoon at Alumni Memorial Fieldhouse in Philadelphia, PA. The Eagles improve to 3-1 on the young season. The Hawks stand at 3-2 with the loss and have fallen in their last two outings.
In a closely contested first half that saw the hosts catapult to an eight-point lead, Boston College finished the half strong. Cutting the lead to one with just over a minute left in the first half, the Eagles went on an 11-0 run to close out the half and take a 35-29 lead to the locker rooms. Freshman Clare Droesch (Belle Harbor, NY) spearheaded the surge, tossing in 10 points during that run.
The Eagles continued the second half right where the first half left off. BC continued its run and, behind six points from Nicole Conway (Glenmont, NY), ballooned its lead to 13. From that point on, the Eagles never relinquished the lead. The biggest lead of the night for the Eagles was 13. With some late-game sharpshooting by the Hawks, the Eagle lead was cut to as low as three. BC, however, connected on some key freethrows down the stretch to seal the five-point win.
Droesch finished with a team-high 24 points on 7-for-11 shooting, including 4-for-5 from three-point land. Conway followed with 16 points, also shooting 7-for-11 from the field. Rachel Byars (Morganfied, KY) followed with 14 points and added 11 rebounds in her first double double of the season. Brianne Stepherson (Middleton, MA) and Kim Mackie (Peterborough, Ontario) added 12 and 10 points respectively.
Boston College will host #2 Tennessee Wednesday at 7 pm in a game to be televised on NESN.
