INDIANOLA, Pa. - Chris Churchill scored just 2:12 into the first overtime to complete Pittsburgh's 3-2 comeback victory over Boston College at Founders Field on Saturday afternoon. The game also marked the return of the Eagles' junior forward - Casey Schmidt - who saw his first action after suffering broken bones around his eye on Sept. 26.
Boston College took an early 2-0 lead with goals in the eighth and 17th minutes in the first half.
Guy Melamed blasted a shot from 22 yards out that snuck in under the Pittsburgh crossbar above goalkeeper Justin Gaul. The Eagles extended their lead a little more than nine minutes later on a goal by Adam Pfeifer from the top of the box. Neil Krause picked up an assist on the goal on a short pass right before Pfeifer's shot.
The Panthers got on the scoreboard in the 68th minute when Peter Veltri was pulled down inside the box and Miles Dowiak converted on the resulting penalty kick to cut BC's lead in half.
With 9:35 remaining in regulation, Sikora received a throw-in from Jacob Kring turned off an Eagle defender and took a shot from 20 yards away that eluded goalkeeper Danny Caruso and tied the game at 2-2.
Churchill won the game for Pittsburgh when he received a pass from fellow senior Mark Sikora and landed a shot inside the right post.
Boston College outshot the Panters 11-8 for the game. Caruso made three saves, while Gaul had six saves. Chris Cleary had three shots to lead the Eagles.
With the loss, Boston College fell to 10-6-0 overall and 6-4-0 in BIG EAST matches. The Eagles next opponent will be determined on Tuesday night, November 6 when the BIG EAST releases the 2001 BIG EAST Tournament bracket. The team's quarterfinal match will take place next weekend, either Saturday or Sunday, November 10 or 11 and will be played at an as yet to be determined campus site.
