Hockey Rebounds With Victory Over Badgers, 3-1

MADISON, Wisc. - Sophomore Ben Eaves and senior Jeff Giuliano each notched one goal and one assist as Boston College earned a split in its two game series with Wisconsin, winning 3-1 on Saturday before 11,573 at the Kohl Center. The Eagles moved to 3-4-1 overall, while the Badgers dipped to 3-3-0 on the season.
Sophomore Tony Voce put the Eagles on the board first when he netted a power-play goal at 1:22 of the second period from Eaves and J.D. Forrest, but Wisconsin knotted the game on a power play of its own from Kent Davyduke just 2:40 later at 4:02.
Giuliano regained the Eagle advantage when he pocketed a Dave Spina pass off the left boards for a 2-1 lead at 5:21 of the second frame. Freshman Ryan Shannon also received an assist on the goal.
Eaves netted BC's third goal 4:16 into the third period as he skated in and roofed a shot just over Badger goaltender Scott Kabotoff. Giuliano and Spina forced the play out of the neutral zone to set up the scoring chance.
For the second night in a row, both teams played to a scoreless first period, though both teams each had a quality chance.
Toward the end of Wisconsin's first power play, Spina intercepted Wisconsin pass and skated down the wing and into the Badger zone with Shannon behind him. Spina faked Kabotoff down and passed off to Shannon for the shorthanded bid, but the puck slid off his tape at the crease.
Wisconsin's prime chance came with less than a minute remaining in the period. A Badger defender in the corner found David Hukalo alone at the Eagles' blueline and sent him in alone. BC netminder Matti Kaltiainen, who made 10 saves in the first stanza, stopped the breakaway save.
Kaltiainen, making his third career start, stopped a career-high 33 shots, including several breakaway opportunities. Kabotoff made 27 saves on the evening.
Boston College returns to action on Thursday, November 8 when the team hosts Merrimack in a HOCKEY EAST contest at 7 p.m. for the first of a four-game homestand.
