PRINCETON, N.J. - Kaitlin McGrath's goal with just over three minutes to play completed a third period comeback as Boston College rallied from a two-goal deficit to tie Princeton, 3-3, on Saturday afternoon. With the tie, the Eagles broke their seven game losing streak, moving to 1-7-1 on the season.
The match marked the first time in six matches that BC did not play a team ranked in the top 10 nationally. The Eagles' previous four opponents had a combined 30-2 record coming into this weekend's matches.
Princeton jumped out to the early lead at 3:57 of the first stanza, when Lisa Rasmussen took a Melissa Deland pass and fired it past Eagle netminder Lisa Davis (25 saves), giving the Tigers a 1-0 lead. Deland was credited with the lone assist.
The Eagles knotted the score just under six minutes later when freshman Heidi Seidewand beat Tiger goalie Sarah Alquist for her second career goal. Juniors Thia Connolly and Gen Richardson were credited with the assists.
Princeton regained its lead at 15:34 of the first period and this time it was Deland finishing off the attack. Rasmussen and Wanda Mason registered assists on the goal.
The Tiger 2-1 lead held up at the end of two periods.
The Tigers came flying out of the gates in the third period and seemed to have gained a comfortable advantage at 3:10 when Susan Hobson beat Davis to the far post, giving the home side a two-goal cushion. Angela Gooldy and Nikola Holmes assisted on the goal.
As they had done all season, however, the Eagles refused to back down from a challenge. BC began to mount the pressure, buzzing around the Princeton net. At 16:40, their hard work paid off, as Richardson fired a shot, beating Alquist low. Seniors Missy Barsz and Jaclyn Kryzak assisted on the play. For Barsz it was her team-high third assist and seventh point of the season. Kryzak registered her first assist and first point of 2001.
Less than 20 seconds later, McGrath tallied her goal, before a stunned Princeton crowd, to send the match into the extra period. In the overtime, BC out shot Princeton 2-0, but were unable to beat the Tiger netminder.
For the match, Boston College out shot Princeton 31 to 28. Davis made 25 saves for BC while Alquist had 28 saves for Princeton. Both teams were 0/3 on the power play.
Boston College returns to action on Sunday, November 25 at Yale. Game time is set for 2 p.m.
