CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - After the soccer team's 2-0 victory over Villanova this week, two men's soccer players earned accolades for their play. Senior back Paul Bourke was selected as the BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week, while senior forward/midfielder Chris Cleary was chosen to the College Soccer News National Team of the Week.
Bourke (Cork, Ireland) anchored the Eagles' defense from the center back position against the Wildcats. The unit allowed just four shots through the first 80 minutes of the game, preserving BC's 1-0 lead. On the game, Villanova was held to just nine shots. Bourke and the other backs played strong defense down the stretch as Villanova mounted a heavy offensive push in the closing minutes.
Cleary (Milton, Mass.) scored his second goal in as many games, both game-winners. His goal - a diving header in the 42nd minute - gave the Eagles' a lead they would not relinquish. He also scored the game's only goal in BC's previous game against Boston University on Sept. 29. On the season, Cleary has two goals and one assist for five points.
The 24th-ranked Eagles will next take on Connecticut in Storrs, Conn. on Wednesday, Oct. 10 in a 7 p.m. contest.
