NEW BRITAIN, Conn.- The Boston College women's volleyball team defeated Central Connecticut State, 3-2, on Tuesday night in New Britain, Conn. With the win, Boston College tied the all-time school record of 17 wins, improving to 17-8 overall. CCSU fell to 13-13 on the season. Junior outside hitter Rachel Bach led BC with 14 kills and four total blocks.
For the second time in a week, the Boston College volleyball team spotted an opponent a 2-0 advantage before roaring back to win the final three games. This time out, BC struggled to find their game early on, committing untimely errors which allowed the home side to take the early advantage.
But as they had done against St. John's last Friday night, the Eagles rallied to win games three and four and had the mental toughness to squeak out a two-point win in the final game.
Freshman Jessica Brizzolara sat out her first match of the season, and was replaced by junior Lauren Schwer at the setter position. Schwer filled in strongly, registering 46 assists, six digs and five block assists. Sophomore Laura Powers also had a strong game, contributing 13 kills, 11 total blocks and nine digs.
For the Blue Devils, Jackie Fernandez and Alisha Matherne did the damage, scoring 15 kills each with Fernandez adding a match-high 20 digs.
The win, BC's 17th of the season, joined this year's squad with the 1987 team that won 17 games. The Eagles will have a chance to the break the all-time record, needing just one win in their final 4 matches.
Boston College returns to action on Friday, November 2 at Virginia Tech. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
